Profile

The Department of Economics is committed to the advancement of knowledge and learning in the field of Economics. The course requires the application of theoretical knowledge in day to day life. The Economics curriculum is designed to highlight and illustrate the practical importance of Economics in understanding National and Global issues. The Department of Economics had a rich beginning offering B.A Economics in English and Tamil Medium with eight faculty members in 1975-76. Since its inception, the Department has been blessed with highly qualified faculty members and also students with excellence in academics.

At present, 11 dedicated and dynamic faculty members along with the effort of students have produced 95 to 100 per cent results from the first year onwards. A total of 394 students are studying in the department of Economics (350 Under-Graduate, 30 Post-Graduates and 10 Ph.d Full Time and 4 Part Time) in 2022-23. In addition, the department offers papers on Business Economics and Statistical Techniques for the first and second year B.com and B.Com Corporate Secretaryship students. Under Naan Mudhalvan Scheme, Business Analytics is taught for Final UG Students by NSE Academy, and Microsoft Fundamentals is taught for Second UG. The University of Madras has granted permission to start Ph.D course in Economics in the academic year 2016-17 and M.Phil in 2017-18. So far, 22 students have completed M.Phil degree and 6 students have been successfully awarded Ph. D degree.

There are eight well ventilated class rooms and adequate furniture to accommodate students in UG and PG courses. The library is equipped with latest editions of Books and Journals for both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Courses in English and Tamil. Our students have won cash prizes in essay writing competitions, debate and paper presentation in Seminars. Our students also won Endowment scholarship from University of Madras, Shri. M. Bhakthavathsalam Centenary Celebration scholarship and Prof. A.S. Ganasambandham Rajammal Trust. Ph.d Research Scholars are getting merit scholarship from the University of Madras and Government of TamilNadu.

The Department has been successful in identifying and bringing out the innate potential of the students by motivating them to participate in various competitions at intercollegiate level. The Department was the proud recipient of overall Trophy for non-academic activities for three years in succession. Though, the Department has many achievements to its record, still it aspires to strengthen the Economy of India by molding the future policy makers. The teaching fraternity of the department Economics has taken up the extra-curricular responsibilities and exhibits their ability and excelled themselves in various club activities like NIRF, RUSA, IQAC, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Citizen Consumer Club, Red Ribbon Club, Foreign Students Cell.
