The Department of Historical Studies is one of the five departments that were initiated when the college was started. Ever since its inception in 1974 the Department has grown steadily by progressing from an undergraduate department to a full-fledged research department.
In the academic year 1974-75 B.A. Degree in History was introduced with both Tamil and English as medium of instruction. In 1983, the Post-graduate course was introduced for the benefit of the students enabling them to complete the post-graduation in this reputed institution. Another milestone in the development of the department was the introduction of M.Phil. Degree in 1994. It is a matter of pride that the Department had the honour of introducing research education in the College by offering part time Ph.D. program from 2009. From 2012, the Department is also offering the full time Ph.D. program.
At present the Department of Historical Studies is functioning with 12 staff members (7 Permanent and 5 Guest Faculty) 1 with PDF, 7 with Doctorate, and 3 with M.Phil. qualification.
The Department of Historical Studies with a glorious background now looks forward to implement the subjects cater to the needs of the students in the current scenario which helps them to appear for various competitive examinations and for their enhancement of personality skills.
