HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DEPARTMENT
  • The department was revamped in 1974 for women candidates with an undergraduate course in Natural Sciences and a permitted intake of 24 students each in English Medium and Tamil Medium. Presently the student intake is fixed as 39 in each medium of instruction.

  • Post graduate course was started during 1994 with a sanctioned strength of 12 and has been running successfully ever since.

  • M.Phil course was started in the year 2006 -7 with 3 guide-papers. Presently there are 6 guide- papers.

  • The department was recognized as a full -fledged research department eligible to run Full Time Ph.D course during the year 2013-14 with 4 eligible supervisors. Presently, there are 5 supervisors guiding students for their Ph.D.

  • There are 10 Full Time Ph.D. scholars and 5 Part Time scholars working for their doctorate degree in the Department. Of these, 3 (1 FT and 2 PT) have submitted their synopsis.
TEACHING-LEARNING PRACTICES

         A mentor-student approach is followed in our Department. One teaching staff is allotted a class of 39 students where individual care is given to the needy. Different modes of teaching is followed like the traditional Chalk-Talk, Discussion, Practical sessions, Assignments, Quiz, short talks by the students, use of visual aids like LCD, regular one day field trips related to their curriculum and education-cum-leisure trips (4-5 days) are organised that help the students to get exposed to natural habitats of plant diversity.

         Evaluative Feedback is received from the students and their parents every year that makes us aware of their needs and accordingly, the changes are incorporated.

Students are encouraged to participate in academic Seminars and conferences conducted in other city colleges.

INFRA-STRUCTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

Enhanced Physical facilities:-
  1. Room No. 8 is refurbished with repaired roof and door with monetary support from UGC – Major Project (Individual) – Over-Head Expenses.

  2. There are 2 rooms separately earmarked for M.Phil and Ph.D students (Room No.2 & 8)

  3. There is a separate room allotted for Departmental Library – cum reading room

  4. A Herbal Garden is maintained by the Department in addition to a Green House

  5. A permanent Mushroom House has been built in the Garden area with funding from UGC
IT - Infrastructure:
  1. The department has a Desktop and a Laptop with required accessories along with printing facility

  2. There is a LCD Projector facility along with the accessories.

  3. A portable projector ACER make has been procured from individual research project funded by TANSCHE (2013-14)

Every year instruments are being purchased with the State and UGC Funds. Apart from the basic instrumentation facility available in our department, some of the Sophisticated research instruments that are used regularly by our scholars are:-

  3. Inverted Trinocular Microscope with software*

  4. UV-Vis Double Beam Spectrophotometer with Software and PC

  5. Deep Freezer*

  6. Microfuge*

  7. Phase Contrast Microscope

  8. Rotary Vacuum Evaporator*

  9. Water Analyser*

  10. Digital Camera*

  11. Temperature controlled Magnetic Stirrer*

  12. Magnetic Stirrer*

  13. Digital Balance*

  14. Tissue culture rack with fitted accessories

  15. Double Distillation unit (glass) for distilled water

   * Purchased from individual staff research projects funded by UGC and TANSCHE.

  • From the funds procured by the teaching staff as extramural research funding, a total of Rs. 50,000/- was utilized for buying books for the departmental library and Rs. 3 lakhs 63 thousand was utilized for instrument purchase and maintenance for the Department during the past 5 years.
